According to an article published on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 by “The Dallas Morning News” Dallas County retains the worst HIV infection rate in the state of Texas.
The article quotes “Dallas County had the highest HIV infection rate in the state in 2008 and has held that distinction for a number of years, county health officials acknowledged Monday.” The writer goes on to say, that “Dallas County added 859 HIV cases in2008 for a total caseload of 13,500 residents with HIV or AIDS. “ Now please remember that this is not including other nearby metroplex such as Ft. Worth, Texas. These numbers are for Dallas County only.
According to Raeline Nobles, the executive director of AIDS Arms Inc. said that “the HIV epidemic in Dallas County is reaching crisis levels in terms of our city’s health status, economics and quality of life”. To add on to this devastating news, Dr. Keith Rawlings (the medical director who operates AIDS Arm’s Peabody Clinic) said “the clinic demands of individuals living with HIV have evolved to the point where we need to expand the availability of medical services beyond our current facility.”
Last of all… the article goes on to say “in 2008, Dallas County commissioners rescinded a 13-year ban on condom distribution, acknowledging the need to prevent not only the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus but other sexually transmitted diseases as well.”
Now the question is… why was their 13-year ban on condom distribution especially knowing that these numbers has been increasing over the years?
We would like to hear your thoughts.
